Tue 4th, Broome to May River Crossing

Light showers from about 5:30am developing to light rain from 6:30am.have breakfast and pack up in the rain. Leave for Derby about 9am. We arrive in Derby at about 11:30am and go to Sampey Meats where we put in a cryovac order to be picked up on Saturday morning, nice looking butchers shop.

From there it is off to Woolworths for bread and some cleaning products. There is a camping shop across the road, a mandatory visit. It has lots of womens clothes, Chris is very tempted. We walk out with only a couple of $1 plates to stand mozzie coils on.

Drive out to the May River crossing where we walk around and look for a place to camp. Can't get into the deep water hole upstream, tried one of the tracks but that petered out. Sit down and have lunch and a glass or two of white wine while we wait for the James' to arrive. Thinking of camping 500m downstream near a long water hole. Just about to give up and go do it without their input when they arrive. We decide to go ahead with that plan and I let my tyres down to 18psi and go off. Get to within 100m of the proposed campsite where there is a shallow water crossing and suddenly run into soft wet sand and stop.

Maxtrax back a couple of times but on the second attempt I'm unable to get enough steerage to stop the trailer from jack knifing. Drop pressures all round to 12psi and I'm able to drive forward and then reverse the trailer out. Go back and camp in a safer place nearer the road. Campsite is pretty good, no one else comes in, some flies and moths and a stack of small frogs but not much else.

Dinner is left over Chinese takeaway from the previous night. Nice open fire in the evening.
