Sat 18th, Ningaloo Station

Light winds and blue sky in the morning. Mike and Sue a packing up and heading for Ballara Station after which they will go to Cossack, we will probably see them again in Point Samson in a few days.

Mid morning Chris and myself drive north through the RAAF Weapons Range to Boat Harbour the bottom campsite in the Cape Range National Park. Lovely informative camp hosts in attendance. Only 5 campsites. A lovely little bay with a rocky ledge going out on the right. Good snorkelling in close with lots of coral and good fishing. See an 8' shark resting on the bottom and another long tom like I caught yesterday. The rocky ledge would make a brilliant fishing platform. No fishing for me though, it is all packed away.

We return to Ningaloo Station via the weapons range and drop into a number of spots on the way. There are numerous tracks into the beach where up until a few years ago camping was permitted.

In general terms not that impressed with Ningaloo, both the station and the national park. Neither the beach fishing or coral snorkelling is as prevalent as you read about. Both require local knowledge, our week here is really to short to discover it. The place is populated by people who have been coming here for years for extended stays. On Ningaloo Station Phil will store gear for $50, apart from that people cache or bury it ready for next years visit when they leave. People even make a double trip from Perth and beyond to bring up their caravan and boat.

Chris is excited, she caught on the radio that the Lions had beaten Essendon at Etihad.
